Jeff’s Thoughts on Gaming #6

6th edition of whats burning on my mind that I need to get out to you. Lets dive right into it.

Xbox Live on Nintendo Switch

Filler one here, Xbox Live on Nintendo Switch!? Yeah I did an article on this. I feel though this is truly important. We have 2 big gaming companies joining forces in some capacity. You have to say this is good for the gamer in you.

A new industry standard?

Lets see if I can attempt to figure this one out. EA’s new game Anthem seems to have a chart on across where you bought the game is when you can play the game. Let me recreate that chart for you.

If you have Origin Access Premier (PC) You get the demo and full game early Feb 15th

Across all platforms you get the demo.

On Xbox One and PS4 you get the first play trial on Feb 15th but you only get 10 hours of play time. Then the full game releases on Feb 22nd

Does any of that make sense? I don’t understand the 10 hour trial and I really hope that it doesn’t become the new industry standard. I’m fine with early access.

Tax on games with a more mature rating?

This is a please no. This is a hell to the no, Why are we going to tax the consumer based off a game with a more mature setting. That’s like saying that there should be a tax on more mature related movies. I’m not sure where even something like this is thought of. If we have an issue with kids and the more mature related games, The parents need to step into action. You can follow along the article here Lawmakers want tax on mature related content video gaming I will talk about this subject more in a future article. For now though I hope that this does not come to pass.

Fortnite is in a windfall

Even though I am not totally a fan of the game, It’s cool to see it’s success. It is flowing in millions of dollars and lots of gamer’s are really enjoying the game. So what does this mean for other companies and gaming going fourth? It’s ironic also as Fortnite technically isn’t a complete game. For starters I don’t want to see companies or games coming out half complete that’s something that would drastically hurt the gaming landscape. A message to developers, Sometimes graphics aren’t all what makes a game. Game-play and having fun playing the game is what will keep the player coming back.

Consumer Report #2 Is the Xbox One X worth it?

Welcome back to the second edition of Consumer Reports. Today I’m focusing on the Xbox One X. Microsoft’s most premiere console to date.

What is it?

The Xbox One X is the 3rd release of the Xbox One. Notably the Xbox One X is of greater power to its 2 predecessors (Xbox one S and Xbox One) It’s main focus is on rendering 4K graphics. This is for performance and and improving existing games to utilize the full graphics.  The Xbox One X is pretty beefy in relation to specs inside the console. Notably Microsoft has it now where the system uses a vapor chamber, Therefore water cooling the components of the system down. You can get the full specs list here.  Microsoft has been known to mention that the Xbox One X is a competitor to the PlayStation 4 Pro. The console comes with a controller, a user friendly power supply, and a HDMI cord. The controller uses double A batteries which may come as a surprise to some, I will get to that later though. Power supply they have notably scrapped the large power brick that the original Xbox One console carried.

Cost?

I’ll say that you are paying for what you get in terms of hardware. Again this is a pretty beefy console here almost doubling those specs of other consoles (including the Xbox One S itself) $499 USD, $599 CDN, Australia takes it home at $649. You can get a deal on different editions for the console also.

How is it?

I personally got an Xbox One X on Christmas Day 2018, It has been nothing but the greatest of great experiences for me in so many other ways. I won’t include things like game pass or xbox live as it’s just added features to most of the 3 consoles. I noticed right away how quiet and speedy the system was. I was impressed by that fact, Personally I really cringe at hearing my console chug from trying to prevent itself from overheating or overworking itself. In comparison, My original model PlayStation 4 over it’s time has been overheated and overworked itself that it doesn’t quite bring out its usual good performance now. I like how Xbox One when I am downloading a game I can turn the console off and it will still be downloading. Sleep mode is fine but as for those who rather just power down it’s better to conserve the consoles energy. Coming back to the controller now, At first I was skeptical of it still using commercial batteries eh it was a questionable move. I was beyond wrong. Using some good batteries makes the controller last a very very long time. It has a way better lifespan than the PS4 controllers, I find myself with my ps4 controllers I need to recharge them almost every few hours. Based on time tracked in my games I’ll say the controller can last up to 30 hours. The interface is very user friendly and easy. Loading up games and app’s have been real great and efficient. Cool part too you can connect to a 5G service wifi. Pretty handy if I may say.

FINAL THOUGHTS

If you are looking to go into the high end market and want something that will last you a while. The Xbox One X is for you. You will be paying for the system performance. If you happen to have a 4K TV then your in for a great gaming experience. The Xbox One X is just that close in comparison to a PC. A PC is the tops of all gaming (yes settle down) You are truly getting the best of the best. Add in Microsoft’s Game Pass and you are truly in for some great gaming times. If you aren’t quite ready or don’t need all the beefy hardware you can stick with an Xbox One S. I am giving the Xbox One X a 4.5 Stars out of 5 that’s pretty close to a perfect score! Get a gaming bundle and have some fun!

Jeff’s Thoughts on Gaming #5

Back at it again with some thoughts on gaming!

Will Kingdom Hearts 3 live up to the hype?

Great question eh? Kingdom Hearts 1 released in 2002. 3 years after 2005 Kingdom Hearts 2 releases and is a masterpiece also. We waited a real long time for a third installment in the series and we are inching much more closer now. Due to the years apart between releases I do think it will now capture a different type of players to it. Nothing against them now I honestly hope they enjoy the game, I do feel that their voices will be the more bigger influence now though than the older gamer who played the game way back in 2002/2005. So we shall see!

EA has failed at Star Wars games

2013-2019 Has brought us only 2 Star Wars games, Both Battlefront games and both seriously lacking in all areas of the game. Even their online portion was very dry. EA has canceled the open world Star Wars game. It’s severely disappointing to us fans who’ve waited so long and in return we have gotten very little back. How much trust now do you put into EA? Sometimes a picture just does it more justice. img_2798 Ouch…I remember being real excited when EA was doing the next Battlefront, I even had it pre-ordered. When I got the second one and I think it was more empty and dry, There just are no words for the huge let down.

Crowdfunded video games seen a decline in 2018

I’d figure at some time or another this was bound to happen. How many times have you seen a game get the funding from the consumer and then just have it come out with broken and empty promises? We seen it happen all too much. It’s just unfortunate because then the ones out there that are holding true to their word won’t get the support that they deserve. Personally for me I can’t do it as unfortunately I have been on the wrong end of it too many times. Tabletop games seemed to be what took over on the kickstarter.

Thinking gaming 2020

Yes, the year 2020 is coming up. A new decade. This may be early to talk about but right now I think we should be enjoying the last of what this decade has to offer. Then you have to think how has this decade been gaming wise? 4K was on the rise, Games like GTA, Skyrim, PUBG, Breath of The Wild, Mario Odyssey, Kingdom Hearts 3, etc there is beyond so many games to even mention. I also think too has it changed video gaming for the better? That is the question we shall find out closer to the end of this decade.

Consumer Report #1 Why did the PlayStation Classic Fail, Should you buy or pass on it?

My thoughts on the Sony PlayStation Classic in this very first edition of Consumer Reports

Welcome to my new series about you the consumer. These articles are important to me as it will help the regular consumer get the best and most bang for their buck on various gaming and technology that is out there today.

So today we are looking at Sony’s venture into the classic edition market. Is it too early to call it a fail? Well it’s dropping price fast and there is little to no interest on it’s device.

What is it?

The Sony PlayStation Classic is a small little device representing that of an original PlayStation that debuted back in 1995. Included were 2 controllers notably the very original controllers that did not have analog sticks, A USB Micro A-Standard USB-A Cable, Also a standard HDMI cable. Notably an AC adapter was sold separately. The device features 20 games and vary depending on the region you are in. (North America, Europe, Japan) The games ran on an emulator specific to the PlayStation. The device itself playing games from the original PlayStation with a setup of today’s technology ex, having save states and ability to suspend the game play to return to it at a later point.

Cost?

In Canada the PlayStation Classic retailed at around $130. The United States for $100. In Australia the device cost $150. The PlayStation classic can be seen on sale in Canada for about $79.99, About a $50 difference from the original price. The USA you can find it now at about a price for $45-$50 resulting in a a difference of about $50-$55. The PlayStation Classic released on December 3rd, Less than a month it was dropped in price.

How is it?

Well, The most notable thing was it’s questionable gaming lineup. I won’t get into every game but there were some huge omissions including some of Sony’s classic games that made the PlayStation the console of choice back in 1995. The console library was lacking. The controller using the original controller didn’t really help them as some games it is challenging using a D-Pad for various movements. The overall software also is questionable. The device playing the games uses ROM’s. Most of the ROM’s are PAL (European Region) and therefore do not fully optimize or work on a North American TV. Those are 3 massive blows already. I have seen game play of some of the games affecting the frame rate and struggling to help emulate the game.

FINAL THOUGHTS

It’s just very disappointing, Sony could have really knocked this out of the park. I am not 100% sure on how the licensing of some of the games would work, Though what made the PlayStation as great as it was back in 1995 was it’s great library of games. Crash Bandicoot games, Spyro, Tomb Raider, etc. I mean the NES Classic and SNES classic have been on the market for a real long time, One of Sony’s biggest competitors also. Couldn’t have someone bought any of their devices and done some research on it before they started to make their own? The NES and SNES classics have been a huge success. Then you have the issue with the lack of the analog stick. So the couple games they have like Metal Gear Solid and Syphon Filter would have been way more better with an analog stick as opposed to the d-pad. The issue of optimizing, The ROM’s being PAL where in North America is only optimized to NTSC. Personally also payin $130 (Canadian Dollars) I would rather them add an AC adapter rather then having to buy it separately, I get the idea but when your concerned about voltage and stuff like that, Maybe you aren’t too informed on that subject so it would just be better to have the adapter included. I’m giving the Sony PlayStation Classic a 2.5 Stars out of 5. It is nice to go back to the past and relive it, Though at what cost and paying for what your hoping is at least an optimized device for your region.

Jeff’s Advice

If you really want one just keep on waiting because the price is going to keep on dropping. Keep your eyes open you never know either there may be a sale somewhere and you’ll be able to pick it up for real cheap. I wouldn’t spend more than $25-$35 on the device. I don’t think it’s really worth that much, Don’t forget you will have to buy an AC adapter also. Lets just hope this doesn’t become a standard for Sony.

Jeff’s Thoughts on Gaming #4 1/10/19

Welcome back to the January 10th edition of Jeff’s Gaming Thoughts!

LAST ARTICLE: Jeff’s Thoughts on Gaming #3 1/8/19

Activison and Bungie part ways

2 pretty big companies have decided to go their separate ways. Activision and Bungie who were working on the Destiny series it will now be interesting to see how Bungie will go fourth with this venture as they now acquired the sole rights of the franchise. Personally Destiny 1 was a huge flop for me for many reasons, Destiny 2 seemed like to have gone through the same thing. So what does this mean for a possible Destiny 3? Well now with Bungie who had success with the Halo series can do what they want without someone else leaning over their shoulder. Is this the start of a change for the series? It remains to be seen.

Another Fantasy On The Nintendo Switch

It’s been redone and remastered and whatnot. Final Fantasy 10 and 10×2, The Zodiac Age will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. What does this mean? You can play a main series Final Fantasy game on a Nintendo console once again! As it with being on the switch you can also take it on the go. Honestly I’ve been over with remakes for a while now, I do think this is cool though it is what it is. I would of course love to see the series make a return full time to Nintendo back where it originally started.

Will we see a slow down on game remakes?

Oh lord I hope so. Look I am all about preserving and not forgetting the great games, Though really how many times are we going to get The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time? I heard a rumor that it was going to be coming out again in some capacity. Also too right now there are a number of games too that would be way more well deserving, Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube is one of those many deserving titles. How about a remake of a Clock Tower game? Now I understand the licensing and other stuff is an obstacle so one can only dream. As for a whole though where do we stand on the gaming remakes? It’s starting to get old and stale and I can see the old gamer quietly being turned off as they would like to see something fresh and new hit the market.

Is Digital the new way of life?

Seems like it everyday. I prefer a physical copy of things of course, I think it’s in a way becoming inevitable that digital will be the new main thing. What about streaming then? Oh wow I can see so many ways how it would not work and be something bad against the consumer. Digital distribution is great though for the issues on pre-ordering. The whole pre-ordering of games can be pretty messy and scalpers, resellers, etc oh my goodness. Digital in a way along with streaming really only benefits those with some good storage space and passport devices for more storage, Internet and unlimited internet would be a must also. Internet speed you may get away with for just getting digital games but streaming would be a different story. Unlimited internet would be a must in either case as going over your data would be pretty pricey. Pros and Cons here!

Jeff’s Thoughts on Gaming #3 1/8/19

New year, Time for some fresh thoughts and quick takes on whats shaking up and happening in the deep thoughts of my gaming mind!

Sony’s PlayStation Classic has reduced it’s price

Well sadly that didn’t take long. Sony just really missed the mark on a great opportunity here. It still really baffles me how they messed this up. Even worse too seeing those that have hacked into the UI and found all sorts of things, Like other games that were to be on the system, Other features that folks would have liked to have, They even found NTSC format for the games. I mean I guess I get they wanted this out for the holiday season. I honestly don’t even know one person that picked one up over the holidays or even now at a reduced price.

Xbox Game Pass needs WAY MORE LOVE

Lets say at $79.99 for a new game, 2 new games that’s about $159 so lets say $160+ taxes all that stuff you know. So what if I told you that you can get over 100 games for less than that? I know your probably laughing at me. Well take a look at the Xbox Game Pass. It has a variety of so many great games and even some great classics. PUBG, Sea of Thieves, Forza Horizon 4. They are always adding more games too. You can even score a deal and get the pass for JUST A DOLLAR!

I tried Nintendo’s Online service

Well…. it’s a good start. Cool how they have the NES stuff added and can play online with friends. I gotta admit it is a bit dry. Honestly online hasn’t really been Nintendo’s thing and I’m fine with that. It will be interesting to see what else Nintendo will do with this service and what they may add. For the price of it honestly it’s a lot better than PS Plus and if we are talking price I’ll give it an edge over Xbox Live also.

Are spoilers becoming a problem?

Why ruin the fun for someone else? Seriously it disgusts me. It seems like too looks like it could be a reviewer who is leaking out the spoilers. Well if that the case then it ruins it for everyone, Even the good reviewers. Super Smash Ultimate was leaked and spoilers ran around, You think Nintendo will let this slide? Oh believe me they won’t. Upcoming Kingdom Hearts 3 was also the subject to leaks and spoilers. Personally myself too I have been waiting years and years to be able to play the game. I just hope by the time I get to it that I won’t have it spoiled for me. This just ruins the experience and the person leaking the spoilers too makes them look like a fool. I just hope that future games especially those that fans have been waiting super long for that they don’t run into any leaks or spoilers!

Oh there is still so much gaming goodness on my mind! Though of course with all great things I must hold it to there right now. I would love to hear your thoughts and comments. Giving a shout out to my buddy Steve today! Thanks for enjoying my blogs, liking, commenting, and then messaging me after complimenting my work. Means a lot and I love hearing about it.

Jeff’s Thoughts on Gaming #1 11/26/18

Something to think about, Pondering my thoughts in this all new blog series, Jeff’s Thoughts on Gaming

This is a new little series where I wanted to do, Write whats on my mind and put some thoughts to it. Multiple things on my mind with some short thoughts to it. Lets get into it.

PS5 Coming?

Just makes me wonder how much more can they do? I heard that they want to make it more compatible with a virtual reality 2 that they are supposedly doing. Is this where the trend is though? The supposed price point could be $660+ Canadian dollars. Wow, You know you can get a good PC for cheaper and even be able to play some pretty good games with it. It’s all still a work in progress and will see what happens.

Decline of Fallout games?

Doesn’t look like Fallout 76 is doing as good. Personally Fallout 4 was a dud for me it didn’t stay true or follow what the series had been about. So now take all of what was 4, Remove all that and make it into an online game and what do you have? A confused product. Unfortunately also now with back to back duds of a game how will the loyal and turned off fans be welcomed back? It’s an uphill climb for the Fallout delegate.

Fortnite is Game of the year

Some may be surprised to this as games like Spider-Man and Red Dead Redemption 2 debuted this year. Does this signal a change, Or does this express a cultural movement in gamer’s these days. I am not saying there’s anything wrong with that it’s how it goes these days. I have personally had some moderate fun with it, My issue is that I won’t be able to do as well or achieve what I want in the game as I cannot afford the hours to play the game that so many other players have mastered.

Don’t forget if you haven’t already follow along with you YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3BjgCfT8U7oxAU9EJsK27A?view_as=subscriber
